Gifts for the New Mom

Everybody loves it when a new life is brought into the world (or at least everyone visiting this site!), and the traditional response is to shower the new mom with attention and gifts, both for her and the new baby. If you don't have a child of your own it can be hard to know what gift to give a friend or family member who has just had a baby; here are a few ideas.

Bigger baby clothes. You can bet that a new mom will be showered with onesies, receiving blankets, tiny shoes, and other clothing items that look cute. The thing is, babies tend to grow incredibly quickly; those newborn clothes will only last for a couple of months at the very most. Instead of just getting newborn things, get the new mom clothes that her baby will fit into in a few months (the baby will grow out of these quickly too but at least they will be there when needed). And on the same note, if you see a beautiful ladies' sweater that will look great on mom as she gets her body back, feel free to spoil her too!

Spa gift certificates! Most new moms need some time before they are ready to leave their babies for any amount of time, but sooner or later they need to get out and away. Being a mom is a stressful job, and they can use all the relaxation they can get. Getting a new mom a spa gift package where they can relax and be pampered is a great gift, whether she uses it for a massage to for laser hair removal; just make sure you line up a babysitter.

Meals. The addition of a new baby to any family means that everyday tasks get a little bit harder. Meals make a great gift, whether in the freezable or paper (gift certificates again!) form.

Books. New moms spend a lot of time in the house. They are busy and tired, but it's a weariness that comes in spurts. New moms also have to spend a lot of time sitting around, or being awakened and not able to go back to sleep, and having something to read is a great way to pass the time (and not books about babies, either! Something to take her mind off of things). Maybe she's an architect and would be interested in a book of new house plans or you could get her a book on mandarin translations if she's always dreamed of learning a new language.

Time. When taking care of a new baby, moms can sometimes feel cut off and isolated. A great gift to give a new mom is your time; have a time each week where you go over for a visit, giving her some adult company and conversation. Just a few hours with a friend window shopping for a designer handbag can make all the difference in the world.

A gym membership. It is almost inevitable that a new mom will feel the need to start getting into shape a month or two after a baby arrives on the scene. A membership to a gym that offers childcare while mom works out can be the ideal gift or help starting a home gym, if she's still reluctant to leave the baby alone; but you have to work on your timing!

Little things that make baby raising easier. It is surprising just how much equipment is needed to raise a baby, and there are some little things that can make a new mom's life a whole lot easier. Insulated bottle carriers, diaper receptacles, baby slings and so on can all make the days' chores go by smoother.

If you are headed out to a baby shower, try to remember that it's not just the baby that needs looking after. New moms have a big job ahead of them, and there are lots of gifts you can give to make things a little bit easier.
