No matter if you're welcoming a new baby into your Bay St. condo as a first child or a Windsor home with three other children, it means changes in the way you live your life, and not the least of these changes occurs to the contents of your household. Until you bring home your first baby, it is likely that your belongings have been geared towards you and your partner (if you have one). But the second that baby, or even the idea of that baby, comes into your life everything starts to change. All of a sudden you have to start thinking about a life that is completely different than yours, one with a very specific set of needs that have to be addressed. That quaint dream house for sale in Danforth Village, Toronto is not big enough. That second honeymoon sailing the 30,000 Islands is put on hold indefinitely.
With those baby needs in mind, we are going to write out a list of new things that you will need that are either necessary or helpful (and usually both) in taking good care of the new addition in your life. For now, we will focus on your baby's immediate needs; she's too little to worry about toys, although you will probably find you gain a large amount of those quite quickly.
Bassinet. Most people think of a crib when it comes to baby's sleeping spot, but sometimes we can forget the importance of a bassinet. This is a small bed that can fit in your own bedroom while your baby is still very small. Using a bassinet means that when your baby wakes up for her night time feedings (which will happen frequently and for an undetermined amount of time) you won't have as far to go to reach her. Some parents let their babies sleep right in the bed, but this is not always very relaxing, as we tend to worry about rolling over.
Warm pajamas. No matter what time of year it is, your baby will not be used to the temperature of the outside world. All newborns need warm pajamas, or onesies, to wear at all times. For them, it's like moving to Playter Estates from Cuba in January!
Diapers. Babies need to be changed very frequently, particularly in their first few months. Usually a baby will poop after every feeding, and they tend to eat every few hours. That is a lot of diapers and a lot of changes, so you will need to be prepared. We recommend cloth diapers; they are better for your baby's health, for the environment, and for your pocket book.
Small bath. A small plastic bath tub will also be very convenient for you and your baby. Babies need to be constantly minded while in the bath tub, and a small portable tub will allow you to bathe her wherever you want, from the kitchen sink to your bathroom vanity, and minimize the stress on your arms and knees.
Pacifiers. Depending on who you talk to, you will get a different opinion on pacifiers. Generally, soothing devices won't affect your baby's oral health until she starts to cut her first tooth, and they sure come in handy. Every little thing helps when keeping your baby happy, especially if you're also trying to earn a living from home, maybe running a small real estate website company.
Car seat. Rear-facing car seats are necessary for your baby's safety when you travel. We like the car seat/stroller combination, with a detachable car seat that clips into the stroller as well as to a foundation in the car. This means that you can commute from an Erin Mills home to a summer stroll past commercial real estate in Toronto with the use of one item for the baby.
Having a new baby means a whole new world, both in your mental make up and in the environment of your home.
